TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in Los Angeles – Recap

TAEYANG was amazing during the concert, song after song, high energy. The vocals were on point especially during  ONLY LOOK AT ME  and DARLING.

On stage Taeyang dominates because he is as charismatic as he is sincere. He took the time to thank the fans whom he’s noticed who had been with him to multiple stops. He even took the time to acknowledge that things had not gone as smoothly at other venues and he apologized for that.

The highlight of the night came when TAEYANG brought out a special guest onto the stage, Ysabelle Cuevas. She has posted an English cover of WAKE ME UP on YouTube a few weeks ago, that TAEYANG had reposted in his Instagram account. After her performance, she revealed that she only started posting cover songs on YouTube three years ago. Much to the audience’s delight Taeyang told Cuevas, “You will get a lot of fans after tonight and I want to tell you that I’m already your fan.”

It was a lovely way to end U.S.A. leg of his “WHITE NIGHT” world tour before wrapping up his North American tour in Vancouver before continuing on to his Asia stops.

The venue staff handled separating the different lines professionally even though it was very hot outside and people were very emotional. Once everyone got inside for the soundcheck, everyone perked up again once they heard SUPERSTAR start to play and TAEYANG came out.

TAEYANG was amazing during the concert, song after song, he had so much energy. He sang live the entire time, even played the piano and showed off his dance moves. The background visuals were impressive, highlighting and adding a depth to TAEYANG’s performances like a storybook. During ONLY LOOK AT ME, he accidentally flipped the microphone into his mouth and hurting himself, causing the song to be cut short. He came back for WEDDING DRESS, unfortunately his mouth bleeding again, he finished the song and went off the stage for a bit. TAEYANG came back after a little bit to finish the concert on a happy note.

The highlights of the concert were when TAEYANG used a fan’s handmade daisy spinner and his interaction with the fans. He even put the WARRIOR shirt on and performed with it on! The encore was fantastic. He sang EYES, NOSE, LIPS as one of his last songs and the crowd sang the lyrics along with him. During the send-off event, TAEYANG was very patient and considerate  with his fan. He took the time to interact with everyone who wanted to by taking a selfies, talking with them, even the occasional hugs and high five were given.

The WHITE NIGHT tour was definitely a 5/5 in my book!

South Korean star TAEYANG from BIGBANG performed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia last Wednesday night. The last time Taeyang performed by himself in North America was when he headlined for the MTV Music Experiment 2.0 concert on November 26, 2013 in San Francisco. The Music Experiment 2.0 was a themed, social-media powered music series where tickets are awarded to fans through social media contests.

Taeyang’s debut solo release, Solar, occupied the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Canadian and US iTunes R&B/Soul album chart which was a first for an Asian artist. In 2014 his second solo album, Rise, hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums in its first week. Among kpop solo albums, Rise currently still holds the record for highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 when it hit No. 112 in June 2014. Taeyang’s latest album, White Night, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart marking it his second consecutive release to do so.

Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

He burst onto the stage dressed all in white with White Night. It was the start of a high-energy set that showed off his vocal prowess and a stage presence that simply dominated.

On stage Taeyang is simply captivating, exudes confidence and charisma but at the same time sincerity. He took the time to have conversations with audience members who shouted questions and song requests at him. He was genuinely amused as he scolded the audience when they kept guessing wrong as to which song he was going to sing next. The audience loved the interactions.

He never let up, working the audience and the stage with his hip-hop style dance moves on fast paced songs such as Ringa Linga and Love You to Death, and getting the audience to sing most of I Need a Girl for him. Backed by a four-piece band, whom he introduced during the encore, he hit the high notes wonderfully on songs such as Darling and Amazin’. He even played the keyboard for the Last Dance.

During the encore, he added a few BigBang tracks such as Bang Bang Bang and Fantastic Baby – certainly a sweet treat for the fans.Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapDreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapDreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapSave

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Food Segment

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Food Segment

Written by Ji | 02 September

KCON LA is one of my favorite events to attend every year.  Since the event is so close by, I buy tickets yearly, no matter what groups will attend.  But I am never disappointed by the artist line up and this year was lit. Besides the awesome concert, one of my favorite things to do at KCON is check out all the food booths inside and outside the venue.  Sadly, this year, I couldn’t fully explore the convention floor but I was able to snag a few treats along the way.

When I arrived to KCON, I was slightly hungry and headed towards the two booths who are known to have delicious snacks.  TOUS les JOURS is one of my favorite bakeries, so I knew before I even arrived at the convention floor, that this would be one of my first stops.  I was not disappointed to see the vast amount of goodies they had to offer.  They had different types of breads, marbled caked and even had apple pie.  The best part is they aren’t stingy.  And I don’t have to dance, spin a wheel, take a picture or do anything silly for the yummy treat.  You basically just go to the pastry area, and politely take a snack or two.

If you wanted something warm to eat, Bibigo was right next to them.  They served up kimchi, dumplings and had a variety of sauces for you to try.   Since I arrived late, I wasn’t able to see if they changed their snacks up or if they just served the same dish throughout the event.  Either way, a warm yummy snack always makes my heart and tummy very happy.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Food Segment

I really wished I had more time to visit Lotte and Snack Fever booths, but time was not on my side.  Next year, I will be more cautious about my schedule, and make sure this is the only event I will attend.  Because every year KCON convention gets bigger and better.  There is always much to see and experience.  Even if you can’t get tickets to the event, the convention is worth a visit.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

Written by Ji | 01 September

KCON!!!  When I finally arrived to KCON, I quickly glanced and took pictures at every booth there.  My time at the convention was short but I’m pretty proud of what I accomplished.  According to my bank statements, I had a glorious spending spree at KCON.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

I know what you’re thinking.  That does not look like a shopping spree.  And for those that did go to KCON, will notice a few things that were given out for free.  I actually bought a lot of the same product.  Like I bought 10 of those cucumber eye patch but to fit all of them in one picture would be difficult.  And if you are wondering why I bought 10 of those, my review on the product will be up within a month.  But you can probably guess why I bought 10.

To simplify things, for this article, I’m going briefly go over some booths.  But honestly, for the rest of this year.  The theme is most likely going to be KCON.  For today’s article, I’m going to go talk about several booths that drew in a crowd at KCON.  KCON convention was divided into different zones.  I will start with the CJ Cultureplex zone.

SEP beauty is Korea’s number 1 sustainable make up brand that will launch on Nordstrom.com this fall.  At least that’s what the host has ingrained into my head while checking out their lipstick and nail polish line.   This booth was one of the best beauty booths at KCON.  The host were funny, got their point across and had a ton of testers out to try out their products.  They even gave out free nail polish with a nail filer.  I won’t give out all the details, but I am in love with the peel off nail polish.  Curious?  You should be.  They had a great market strategy at the event that bought in a mass of people who were curious about their products.

The next booth is Olive Young.  If you missed this booth, you totally missed out.  They were giving out so many types of samples, I just wanted to camp there (in the short time I was at the convention) and take all their goodies.  They gave out nail stickies if you posted a picture of the “one nail” you got done.  I thought that was hilarious.  But in order to save time, they only did one nail (of your choosing) and then they gave you a set of stickies to complete your look.  I have never been a fan on nail stickers, but these were not only super cute but they lasted a lot longer than I thought they would.  They also gave out a tons of different face mask, depending on which brand you posted on your social media.  My favorite part was picking a key and unlocking some goodies.  They had moisturizers, audience passes, face mask, and other skin care products.  I was a little greedy and tried for the passes but failed to win.  But they gave me more face masks just for trying.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

The next zone I will discuss is the Sponsor Zone.  In this zone, there was only one beauty booth.  But this booth constantly had a line.  But that line was completely worth it.  I believe there were 4-6 different ways to collect skin care goodies from them.   In that tiny booth, you could sign up for info, take picture with Lee Min Ho poster board or on their bench or backdrop.  They had a claw game I really wanted to try, but that line was always so long.  Out of all the booths, I felt rushed trying to get to each station to do my task.  But honestly, if I had more time, I would have done it again.  Because Innisfree has amazing products.

The next zone is the Korea Zone.  I will save this section for beautiFRIDAY, as this is the area that pretty much took all of my money.  But there is one booth I would like to mention.  Only because they didn’t sell any products, but if you posted on Instagram a picture of their product, they gave you a full-size product of your choice.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

I was allowed to do this twice and received a contour compact and a lipstick.

The last and final zone is the Beauty Block!!! Like the previous year, this area is made to sample and test out new products.  I am really happy with the way KCON had the booths arranged this year.  This area was more open than the previous year, making it easier to check out what each booth had to offer.  Like with the other zones, I will briefly pick out a couple of booths and on beautFRIDAYs, I will go over each booth in more detail.  It was really hard to pick out only a few booths because this area was amazing.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

I got my nails done at imPress booth, got my eyelashes done at the KISS both, and picked up some amazing products from all the other Beauty Block booths.  The imPress Booth had a good selection of press on nails you can try.  They even did your nails for you.  And it comes with 30 nails, so that means you got to take home the left overs.  I have tried press on nails before, and they don’t really last.  These ones lasted much longer and I was impressed with the quality and look of the product.  If I was pressed on time, and wanted my nails to look gorgeous.  I would use this product.  To top it off, I went to the MOYOU nail booth, and added more emblisments with their stencils.  They have an impressive selection that added a little flair to my already beautiful nails.  Next, I visited the KISS booth.  I love KISS eyelashes.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

I use them frequently.  They are easily accessible at my local stores, and their cost is very affordable.  Having them done by a professional was definitely a highlight.  I had so much fun picking out the perfect eyelashes for the concert.

And I wanted to give a shout out to My Beauty Diary booth, they had a great selection of beauty mask. Which by the way, if you spent $20, you got a free cute storage box.  I got two.

Adventure time with DKI: KCON Beauty Segment

Another booth I wanted to mention was Feather and Bone.  They are not a Korean brand, but her little booth was super cute.  I have yet to try the product out, but her skin looked amazing.  So of course, I had to buy it.

I really wish I could have spent more time at each both and really get a feel for what each one had to offer and what makes them stand out.  Hopefully next year I will be able to spend more time and money buying all things related to Korean skincare.

Adventure Time with DKI – Asian American Expo January 2017

Adventure Time with DKI – Asian American Expo

Written by Ji

Adventure is out there!  That’s pretty much my motto.  I saw an advertisement on Facebook for the Asian American Expo and decided to click the link.  It’s an expo that that brings together different Asian countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year.  How could I not go?  I love festivals.  Not to mention the websites states there are three different food courts and over 1,000 vendors.  I decided to take my parents with me because there will be giveaways at this event, and I needed help obtaining all the free things we can get. Why?  Because it’s fun and who doesn’t need another free tote bag, that they will forget to bring to the grocery store and end up paying another 10 cents for a recyclable bag.  Just me?

When we arrived to the event, it was a sensory overload.  You are overwhelmed with the smell of food, hear different types traditional music, and visually, the magnitude of this expo is off the charts.  They had an anime section with a ton of cosplayers, they had a section for food, skincare, items for the house, the list just goes on.  For the purpose of this article, I will stick to Korean Food and Skincare.

Let’s talk about Skincare!  There were familiar booths, brands I’ve seen, brands I’ve never heard of and brands I’ve been dying to try.  It was a one stop shop for all your needs for Korean Skincare.  I was not able to take pictures of all the amazing skincare booths. This place was packed with people who did not appreciate me being in their way, while I was trying to take a picture.  But I was able to take a picture of three booths where I purchased few products to try out for BeautiFriday.  My first stop was the MEMEBOX booth.

I bought the ELIZAVECCA Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask.  Sadly, I could not buy more from this booth since it was cash only.  So I decided I would come back after checking out the rest of the convention.  The next booth I hit up was The Korean Beauty Candy’s Cosmetic Store.

At this booth, I was tempted to buy the skincare sets in the picture.  I love sample sets.  They aren’t cheap and will cost $30 and up depending on the brand, but it’s still a good deal.  I don’t buy full size unless I know I will like the product.  At this location, I bought Dr. Jart+ face mask. I normally get these at Sephora but I couldn’t help but buy a few here since they priced it below Sephora cost.  The last booth caught me by surprise.  It was located outside by one of the food courts.  I honestly passed by this booth over and over again and didn’t realize it was a Korean Skincare booth.  I was too busy looking for something to eat to notice this booth.  It only caught my attention when I was pushed into this booth due to the heavy traffic.

At the Meng Meng Da Shop booth, I bought a few JayJun face masks, a product I have never tried before but read some great reviews regarding the brand.  When I was finally done, I went back to look for food.

This was not a good day for my diet.  Not only did I NOT choose healthier choices but I also exceeded my calorie count by a lot.  My first delicious entrée was from Seoul Sausage Co.  I had the Korean BBQ Beef Burger.  Where’s the picture of my yumtastic meal?  I did not take any.  I was starving at this point, and when my order was ready, I was basically trying to walk and eat to my next location.  Which wasn’t easy, because this burger was messy.  But let it be known, I am not a quitter!  I successfully and messily ate my entrée to my next location.

And this was my next location!  Luckily, I finished my burger by the time I hit up the Miister Potato booth.  From here I got the iconic spiral potato and the very flavorful grilled squid. And I know what you’re thinking.  Ji took a picture, right?  No, I didn’t.  But, how could I? One hand was holding my potato and the other one the squid.  I mean I could hold both in one hand but I didn’t think about that till after.  When I’m hungry, I don’t think properly.  Please forgive me.  Next convention/expo, I will take better pictures.

After eating, I decided it would be officially safe to visit the food market.  I don’t go to the grocery store hungry.  If I do, I end up spending more than I should on products I don’t need.  The food building was one of the busiest buildings at the expo.  There were a lot of people trying to get free samples and trying to make deals with the vendor.  Getting around this area and trying to take pictures was not an easy task.  But I did my best and got a few pictures.

This booth was packed.  I wanted to buy one of the BBQ seasonings but I kept getting pushed to the next booth.  Maybe next time.

I had to take a quick picture of this booth.  Who doesn’t want a picture of one of the best rice cookers.  It has nothing to do with the handsome oppa on the banner.

I found a whole booth selling Master Kim Byeong Man’s Seaweed. Yum!

There were an abundance of booth selling many different types of ramen at the expo.  I bought a few from this booth because sometimes I’m too lazy to use my own bowl.  Sometimes, I just want to add water, wait 3 minutes and eat.  I don’t have to worry about doing dishes after.

The last picture I took was of the LOTTE booth.  They had different types of Pepero, Choco Pies, and Milkis.  I decided to purchase the long skinny box of Pepero for $1.  I thought it was going to be one big, long Pepero but instead of one, there were three medium size one.  Similar to the ones they use for the Pepero game in variety shows.  I kinda want to play that game with my new purchase.  But sadly, I don’t have anyone to play with.

Would I go here again?

Yes!  There were so many booths filled with food, samples, skincare, giveaways and the entertainment was amazing.  There was so much to do and learn.  This is would be a great experience to go solo or with a family or friends.  I would recommend this expo to anyone. But be warned, there are a lot of people at this event, if you want to avoid the crowds, go when it first opens.
