KMUSIC: January Spotlight

Written by Ji | 30 January 2018

The January comeback songs were full of longing, soul and heartbreak. I must admit, listening to them made my heart ache a bit but luckily there were some songs that lifted my spirit. Here are a list of comebacks that made my list for January KMUSIC Spotlight.

The first group on my list is Block B with their single, “Don’t Leave”. I love when Block B comes out with ballads. They are able to express such emotional words so perfectly with their vocals. The mix of their voices plus their beautifully done music video sets them apart from the rest of the contenders this month.

The next group is Mamamoo with their single, “Paint Me”. Mamamoo usually comes out with the same type of music, but this one had a different type of vibe. It was a different type of powerful and soulful that we normally hear from them. This song was strong and full symbolism. Each color represented a new emotion, a feeling, an expression. It was a simple but well done video that made a big impact on me.

I have listed two music videos for N. Flying, “Hot Potato”. This song brought me back to a happy state, especially their dance video. I am solely putting this on the list, because this song is awesome. Seriously, watch it. You welcome.

And lastly, Jonghyun “ Shinin”. I know, this is completely bias. He is after all my favorite in SHINEE. I always loved his voice and his ability to make music that speaks to me. (May he his soul rest in peace).

This month, like the past few month was filled with amazing comebacks from so many people groups. Here are some honorable mentions that I need to be mentioned.

Red Velvet “Bad Boy”. After watching countless videos of heartbreak and regret, this song had a different vibe of seduction and want. The beat caught my attention and the catchy chorus was stuck in my head for a few hours.

The next honorable mention goes to INFINITE, “Tell me”. By the time I got to the chorus I was hooked. INFINITE did not disappoint with their new song and their impressive dance moves.

I honestly wish I could add at least 10 more songs to this list. From Sunmi, Oh My Girl, iKON, 5TION, Kim Kyu Jong of SS501, Suzy, and many others. There were so many strong comebacks, it was hard to choose. Especially since so many of them are on my list of groups that I love to watch and listen too.

KMusic: December Spotlight

Written by Ji | 30 December 2017

I can’t believe another month has come and gone and that we were blessed with new music and comebacks from such amazing groups.  This month was filled with holiday music and the perfect soothing tunes for the colder weather.  Here are my December KMusic Spotlight (I took the liberty to add a few holiday songs.  After all, what’s December without some holiday cheer).

My first holiday song spotlight goes to Twice – “Merry & Happy”.

I love traditional holiday music.  It makes me happy and my mood always brightens whenever I hear upbeat music.  This song fits that category.  It has an up-tempo beat filled with catchy lyrics mixed with their cherry persona, makes one heck of track.

My next holiday song spotlight goes to Starship- “Christmas Day.”

In my opinion Starship always come out with happy holiday music.  This song has a nice warm beat to keep you smiling through the cold winter season.

December isn’t just about festive holiday music, we also had some great comebacks from Rain, Zion.T, Day 6 and many others.

The first December comeback spotlight goes to XAVII – “Come & Go.”

While I was trying to relax and enjoy some quiet time, I had this song on repeat.  It’s soothing, soulful and his flow is on point.

My next December comeback spotlight goes to Twice-  “Heart Shaker”

I know, they were added “twice”, but I really liked this song.  After listening and watching all the comebacks, I was getting emotional from all the sad winter songs and this song just lifted up my spirits.

My last song is EXO- “Universe”.

It’s a nice soft ballad with a beautiful piano medley.  The song goes straight for the heart with it’s both touching and sad lyrics.

Honorable Mentions

Day 6- “I like you”

I think this is one of the best Day 6 songs.  I love vibe, the music arrangement and the lyrics.  I would of made this song a spotlight, but since they have been releasing songs every month, I decided to add them to this section.

YongJin Kim(김용진) – “Alt+F4” (With 정동수(ARKAY))

This song just needs to be heard.  The music video wasn’t filled with anything special but the song itself stands on its own.  It’s not a slow winter tune but has a nice mellow fun beat.

BUMZU –“ I’m Good”(아무렇지 않아) (Feat. Sik-K)

I’m really feeling this song at the moment.  I’m not going through a break up, but the song has a nice smooth beat that make everything feel like it’s going to be ok.  You can’t help but bob your head to the amazing beat

Special note from me:

Ummm, don’t hate me but I had too… only because I’m a little, slightly bias.  Here is the SM Station release of a group you may have heard of.  I’m sorry, I just had to add them.  But it’s on the very bottom and technically not on the list, but I can’t help it.  Not only was I loving the funny yet simple music video, I was also dancing their very simple dance.  Do I even have to say their name?

You’re welcome!

KMUSIC: November Spotlight

KMUSIC: November Spotlight

Written by Ji | 28 November 2017

November was filled with big hits and strong comebacks, choosing a few artists to spotlight this month was a total nightmare.  Since this is my birthday month, I decided to give myself a present and allow myself to give the spotlight to more than the allowed amount.  After all, how could I pick from senior artist like Shinhwa Kim Don Wan or Super Junior. And groups like Wanna One and BTS who came out swinging with their new releases.  Then there was KARD, Snuper, SEVEENTEEN, Red Velvet, EXID, and so many others.  I wish I could showcase everyone, as I believe they all deserve the spotlight.  But sadly, I could not.  Here are my favorite November comebacks.

First up, MONSTA X’s “DRAMARAMA”.  I was hooked the second that intro kicked it.  The song has a nice rhythmic danceable beat that makes me want to get up and dance.  Which during the holiday season, any extra ways to exercise is welcomed.  I appreciated the rap portion of the song, it gave out strong and powerful vibe that blended nicely with guitars melody.  Fun Fact, MONSTA X debuted in 2015 and received their first music show win on “The Show” for “DRAMARAMA”.

Next on my list is Wanna One’s “Beautiful”.  I fell in love with the melody and had this song on repeat.  It gave a familiar pop ballad feel with a medium tempo that made me want to bob my head to the beat.  I thought this song perfectly showcased Wanna One’s vocals while keeping it simple and perfect for the fall season.

Up next is Astro’s “Crazy Sexy Cool”.  When I first heard the song, I was a little shocked to know that it was Astro.  Normally their songs have a more fun bubble gum pop vibe.  Their new song showcased a mature, cooler yet still innocent side of them.  It was a simplistic song with a great chorus.  I was definitely snapping my fingers to the beat.

And lastly, a highly anticipated comeback from Super Junior.  Again, it’s my birthday month and I waited a long time for this, so I am choosing both their songs.  I maybe a “little” bias, but hear me out.  I know “One More Chance” is not their comeback song, but the pop-rock ballad just calls to me with their emotional mesmerizing vocals.

“Black Suit” on the other hand is the type of song we expect from Super Junior.  It’s an upbeat danceable track that is filled with energy.  It gives off that same Super Junior vibe that we know and love.

Honorable Mentions:

It really was hard to pick this month, and I am not bias towards boy groups but this month, they did speak to me more.  Like I mentioned earlier, there were just too many to list.  BTS new song was lit and the week that they were here in LA, they were the talk of the town.  However, they didn’t release a CD this month, only a song.  So that’s why they are under this category.

I also wanted to mention KARD.  KARD’s music usually has the same type of vibe but this one stands out to me.  The song was filled with powerful vocals which pared nicely with the strong rap portion.  However, that music video caught me completely off guard and I needed a moment to recuperate from it.

Who/Where/When: TAEYANG 2017 WORLD TOUR WHITE NIGHT in Los Angeles, California, The Wiltern, September 12, 2017.

Highlight: When Taeyang brought a fan out on stage who sang an English cover  of “Wake Me Up”

TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in Los Angeles – Recap

by Dee

TAEYANG was amazing during the concert, song after song, high energy. The vocals were on point especially during  ONLY LOOK AT ME  and DARLING.

On stage Taeyang dominates because he is as charismatic as he is sincere. He took the time to thank the fans whom he’s noticed who had been with him to multiple stops. He even took the time to acknowledge that things had not gone as smoothly at other venues and he apologized for that.

The highlight of the night came when TAEYANG brought out a special guest onto the stage, Ysabelle Cuevas. She has posted an English cover of WAKE ME UP on YouTube a few weeks ago, that TAEYANG had reposted in his Instagram account. After her performance, she revealed that she only started posting cover songs on YouTube three years ago. Much to the audience’s delight Taeyang told Cuevas, “You will get a lot of fans after tonight and I want to tell you that I’m already your fan.”

It was a lovely way to end U.S.A. leg of his “WHITE NIGHT” world tour before wrapping up his North American tour in Vancouver before continuing on to his Asia stops.

[GALLERY] TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in San Jose – Review

by Dennis

The venue staff handled separating the different lines professionally even though it was very hot outside and people were very emotional. Once everyone got inside for the soundcheck, everyone perked up again once they heard SUPERSTAR start to play and TAEYANG came out.

TAEYANG was amazing during the concert, song after song, he had so much energy. He sang live the entire time, even played the piano and showed off his dance moves. The background visuals were impressive, highlighting and adding a depth to TAEYANG’s performances like a storybook. During ONLY LOOK AT ME, he accidentally flipped the microphone into his mouth and hurting himself, causing the song to be cut short. He came back for WEDDING DRESS, unfortunately his mouth bleeding again, he finished the song and went off the stage for a bit. TAEYANG came back after a little bit to finish the concert on a happy note.

The highlights of the concert were when TAEYANG used a fan’s handmade daisy spinner and his interaction with the fans. He even put the WARRIOR shirt on and performed with it on! The encore was fantastic. He sang EYES, NOSE, LIPS as one of his last songs and the crowd sang the lyrics along with him. During the send-off event, TAEYANG was very patient and considerate  with his fan. He took the time to interact with everyone who wanted to by taking a selfies, talking with them, even the occasional hugs and high five were given.

The WHITE NIGHT tour was definitely a 5/5 in my book!

TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

by Dee

South Korean star TAEYANG from BIGBANG performed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia last Wednesday night. The last time Taeyang performed by himself in North America was when he headlined for the MTV Music Experiment 2.0 concert on November 26, 2013 in San Francisco. The Music Experiment 2.0 was a themed, social-media powered music series where tickets are awarded to fans through social media contests.

Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

Taeyang’s debut solo release, Solar, occupied the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Canadian and US iTunes R&B/Soul album chart which was a first for an Asian artist. In 2014 his second solo album, Rise, hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums in its first week. Among kpop solo albums, Rise currently still holds the record for highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 when it hit No. 112 in June 2014. Taeyang’s latest album, White Night, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart marking it his second consecutive release to do so.

Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

He burst onto the stage dressed all in white with White Night. It was the start of a high-energy set that showed off his vocal prowess and a stage presence that simply dominated.

On stage Taeyang is simply captivating, exudes confidence and charisma but at the same time sincerity. He took the time to have conversations with audience members who shouted questions and song requests at him. He was genuinely amused as he scolded the audience when they kept guessing wrong as to which song he was going to sing next. The audience loved the interactions.

He never let up, working the audience and the stage with his hip-hop style dance moves on fast paced songs such as Ringa Linga and Love You to Death, and getting the audience to sing most of I Need a Girl for him. Backed by a four-piece band, whom he introduced during the encore, he hit the high notes wonderfully on songs such as Darling and Amazin’. He even played the keyboard for the Last Dance.

During the encore, he added a few BigBang tracks such as Bang Bang Bang and Fantastic Baby – certainly a sweet treat for the fans.Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapDreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapDreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & RecapSave

G-Dragon ACT III: M.O.T.T.E³ 2017 Tour in San Jose – Review & Recap

by: Dee

South Korean pop star G-Dragon, or Kwon Ji Yong performed at the SAP Center in San Jose, California last Friday night.  G-Dragon has slowly been solidified himself in the ranks of celebrities as both the leader of Big Bang and as an style icon in the music and fashion world. He has even recently become the ambassador of Chanel. Big Bang has started their hiatus while the members take their turns serving their nation, G-Dragon share of himself in his latest self-titled album, Kwon Ji Yong.

Dreamkatchers Initiative: G-Dragon in San Jose July 14, 2017

The concert is part of his solo world tour, ACT III: M.O.T.T.E³, which kicked off on June 10, 2017 in Seoul. M.O.T.T.E stands for Moment Of Truth The End.  ACT III: M.O.T.T.E³ is about fans connecting with G-Dragon and getting a closer and more personal look at the Kwon Ji Yong side of him. The San Jose concert was a mind-blowing visual and audio experience of Kwon Ji Yong’s life in the spotlight told via three ACTs through the use of pyrotechnics, on point choreography and vulnerable yet compelling vocals.

From the moment the show kicked off, an hour late, the predominant color scheme seemed to be a bloody red that represented going back to the roots of Kwon Ji Yong’s birth. The concert starts off with an impressive pyrotechnic filled version of Heartbreaker. Even people seated felt the heat from the pyrotechnics.

G-Dragon was absolutely beaming as he introduced himself as Kwon Ji Yong to the audience and welcomed everyone to his show. The audience went wild as he launched into his intro for A Boy.

Dreamkatchers Initiative: G-Dragon in San Jose July 14, 2017

The Band Six

As an artist G-Dragon is full of swag and effortless energy yet oddly vulnerable as he performed, with a few exceptions, tracks from his discography in chronological order. Since the tour had a live band, The Band Six, fans were treated to remixed songs from One Of A Kind and Coup d’Etat before performing Kwon Ji Yong in its entirety.

The final encore of his 2017 single Untitled, 2014 was the most potent and humanizing song performed. He wandered off the stage as he interacted with the audience. He seemed so at ease and carefree.

SHINee Concert Review: Post-Concert Stress Disorder (PCSD) Defined

Who/Where/When: SHINee, The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, March 26, 2017.

SHINee Concert Review: Post-Concert Stress Disorder (PCSD) Defined

SHINee Concert Review: Post-Concert Stress Disorder (PCSD) Defined

Author: Leigh Draper (www.whatwouldleighdo.com)

The SHINee World V North American tour literally made dreams come true. International K-Pop fans are well-versed in our unrequited love for our oppas. Some of us have been dreaming for years (some of those dreams still unfulfilled to this day) about what it would be like to see our favorite Korean group breathing the same air that we are breathing. Hopes of even one little finger of ours being graced by one of theirs. Eyes meeting. An acknowledgement of our existence in their world. Hell, an acknowledgment of the chunks of our paychecks we’ve seen fly out the window countless times on internationally-shipped albums and merch. For Shawols, it finally happened.

It wasn’t the first time SHINee had been to America. Just last year they showed-up and showed-out at the Korea Times Music Festival, KCon LA, and even held a fan-meet in Dallas directly afterward. This time, however, we got what only Korean and Japanese fans had been blessed with up to this point: about 2-hours of some of the greatest music on wax. Live and in glorious color. Well, sort of. I did have to come to grips with the fact that the Shrine Auditorium was not, in fact, the Tokyo Dome. There were not going to be explosions, over-the-top sets…the five were not going to mount little carts and throw mementos into the audience as they traversed the space. They were just on a stage. Lights, backgrounds, VCRs. We knew what we weren’t getting. But still, we had the music. We had the choreography. We had a Taemin solo stage. We even had the ments! Plus, my friend and I were blessed to be in the 7th row so we had a much greater chance of at least getting that eye-contact than those in the back or the balcony. No shade on my back/balcony Shawols, I’m just stating facts.

I and four companions took in the show that evening, though our seats were scattered. I was next to one of my besties who’s been a Shawol longer than I have, so it was great. We arrived in style in a limousine (because how much fun is it to watch people watch you arrive–aristocratic chuckle) about an hour before the show was to start. At this point I must say big-ups to our fandom. We were extremely respectable and orderly. We all handled ourselves well, got into the venue, and we even had time for restrooms and refreshments. Excitement was in the air, but not reckless abandon. I’m proud of us.

It was just a really nice atmosphere. There were also some fan projects at our seats upon arrival. I think the feeling toward them was confused optimism. We did what we could with the printed directions, but everyone singing Selene 6.23 in Korean was simply not going to happen. We were able to do a nice 1 of 1 color paper/banner project as well as a nearly-missed early birthday banner project for Jonghyun. As the curtain came down. I’ll never forget Minho saying just before the curtain hit the floor “Oh, your birthday IS soon!” in his great English. More on that later… The show started late, as had all of the previous shows, so there was no surprise. Once it did start, we were all ready to scream, dance, and marvel at the beauty and talent of our shining five. Their performances were exemplary, they kept energy high for the entire show, the VCRs were adorable, and the ments-I have to talk about Key and Minho’s ment. I had known Key was basically fluent in English for quite some time so I was really looking forward to his hosting, but I had NO IDEA how good Minho’s English was! He spoke very confidently (albeit in shorter sentences than our diva-Key) about seeing a Clippers basketball game before the show (the Lakers played during the concert or else he surely would’ve gone to see them instead) and the fact that the members went to and continue to love In-N-Out burger, a California staple. Being an In-N-Out aficionado myself, this only reminded me of one of the hundred reasons why these guys are my guys. Key went on to discuss his love for LaLa Land, sang a bit for us (when he could finally remember some lyrics on the spot) and he and Minho did some Jazz/Power Ranger posing for us as the other members returned to the stage.

I couldn’t hold back the tears during the last song, An Encore (재연). Once that curtain dropped, PCSD immediately set in. The lights came up and still I sat. In my chair, eyes open, just staring. It was over. All the anticipation, all the longing fulfilled yet not fully. And I couldn’t do anything about it. So I just sat. In a strange mixture of delight, relief, and heavy, heavy sorrow. I still didn’t get to meet any of them. I think Minho looked at me once, maybe? Nah, they still don’t know I exist. In their world. A world that’s now gone again back to Korea/Japan. And I miss them. I want more, even though what I just received was amazing. For four days I couldn’t do anything but talk about/read about/listen to SHINee. I had a BTS concert coming and I couldn’t even gear-up properly. PCSD hit me like a missile to the brain. I’m driving to work blasting their music while pushing lumps in my throat back down into my chest. I have to go back to adulting, now. But my hearteu. My heart is-oh my gosh. I just want them to know how much they meant to me. How much American Shawols love them and hope to see them again much sooner than 9 years from now. I just want them to know. Still.
